I still don't know how I do anything there....I just wondered around a bit.
How to mine/pick up blocks, build?

Well to start. punch a tree down and use the wood to make a work bench.

a tree will give you logs.

use the logs to make planks by putting one of the logs in the 2x2 spot at the top of you inventory screen
you will see that you can craft 4 wooden planks by doing that

then take those planks and put them in the same 2x2 space that just put the log in. all 4 spaces should be filled with the 4 planks. and you have crafted a workbench that can be placed in the world. interact with it and you then have a 3x3 crafting space, rather than the 2x2 in your inventory.

try click and hold. eventually you'll see cracks on the tree keep holding the button down until the crack encompass the entire block and it will break off
I can't remember which button, left or right, though
